What is the real meaning of “Tamil

தமிழ், தொல்காப்பியத்தில் இந்த பெயர் முதன்முதலில் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டது. கி.மு 1 ஆம் நூற்றாண்டின் ஆரம்பத்தில் இது தேதியிடப்பட்டது.

 சௌத்ஒர்த் என்ற  மொழியியலாளர்   த-மிழ் > தமி-ழ்  அந்த பெயர் "சுய பேச்சு" அல்லது "ஒருவரின் சொந்த பேச்சு." - ல் இருந்து வருகிறது என்கிறார்.

“காமெல் சு வெலிபில்” என்ற செக்குடியரசு மொழியியலாளர் “தம்-இழ்”  என்பது "தன்னிலிருந்து மலர்ந்து வரும் ஒலி" என்ற பொருள்தரவல்லது என்கிறார்.

ஆனால்

"தம்"  என்றால் "சுய" என்றும் 'ழ்' என்றால் "இறையாண்மை" (அ) "அரசன்" என்று  தமிழன்  வலுவாக நம்புகிறான் . ஆதலால்தான் தமிழர்கள் எப்பொழுதுமே “தன்மானத்தை” பேசுவார்கள்.

 

Tamil, the earliest attested use of the name is found in Tholkappiyam, which is dated as early as 1st century BC.

Southworth suggests that the name comes from tam-miḻ> tam-iḻ "self-speak", or "one's own speech."

Kamil Zvelebil suggests an etymology of tam-iḻ, with tam meaning “self" or "one's self", and "-iḻ" having the connotation of "unfolding sound.

I believe that Tam means “self” and “izh” means sovereign. This is the main reason most  Tamils are proud of self-governance themselves.
